Gamma Knife in Southern California provides patients a safer, more effective and non-invasive treatment for brain tumors

Gamma Knife radiosurgery is used for the treatment of malignant and benign brain tumors and other brain disorders. Considered the best in stereostatic brain surgery, Gamma Knife gives patients a non-surgical alternative for treating brain tumors and other brain disorders. It is also used to complement brain surgeries or radiation treatment. ONE® Brain & Spine Center® provides Gamma Knife procedure for our patients.

Gamma Knife Procedure

The Gamma Knife is a stereotactic radiosurgical device used to non-invasively treat malignant and benign brain tumors, vascular malformations and trigeminal neuralgia in a single patient visit.
It is one of the most advanced technology available today. Supported by decades of research and clinical evaluation and use, Gamma Knife is said to eliminate, shrinks or stop the growth of brain tumors by nearly 90 percent of the time. Its accuracy– within less than three-tenths of a millimeter– makes this revolutionary technology a top choice for brain surgeons and patients. The procedure is gentle and virtually painless and most of our patients are able to leave the hospital the same day. The procedure gives hope to patients with brain conditions that were previously considered inoperable or inaccessible.

History of the Gamma Knife

The first Gamma Knife model was developed by Swedish neurosurgeon Dr. Lars Leksell and a colleague, Börje Larsson, in 1968 during their research for a non-invasive procedure to treat brain disorders. It was proven to be effective in the treatment of brain tumors and arteriovenous abnormalities. Continuing refinement and development of technology through 1975 resulted in today’s Gamma Knife. It was in 1987 when the Gamma Knife was first introduced in the US. Now, more than 700,000 patients worldwide have been safely and effectively treated with the Gamma Knife for malignant and benign brain tumors.
